What is SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and it describes the logic behind the ranking of websites when you perform a search on a particular search engine.
In short, SEO can be defined as a digital marketing strategy that helps increase the quantity and quality of the traffic to your site.
The optimization part of SEO comprises a series of steps that you can take to rank higher on Google and thus get free organic traffic.
Notice that I said steps, meaning that as long as you follow each of the steps (and are patient) you will notice great results.
Although it may seem tedious and painful at the start, SEO can actually be rather fun and easy to implement.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is important because:-
1.The majority of search engines users are more likely to click on one of the top 5 suggestions in the results pages (SERPS). To take advantage of this and gain visitors to your web site or customers to your online store, your website needs to appear in one of the top positions.
2.SEO is not only about search engines but good SEO practices improve the user experience and usability of a web site.
3.Users trust search engines and having a presence in the top positions for the keywords the user is searching, increases the web site’s trust.
4.SEO is good for the social promotion of your web site. People who find your web site by searching Google or Yahoo are more likely to promote it on Facebook, Twitter, or other social media channels.
5.SEO is important for the smooth running of a big web site. Web sites with more than one author can benefit from SEO in a direct and indirect way. Their direct benefit is increase in search engine traffic and their indirect benefit is having a common framework (checklists) to use before publishing content on the site.
6.SEO can put you ahead of the competition. If two web sites are selling the same thing, the search engine optimized web site is more likely to have more customers and make more sales.
The best way to understand SEO nowadays is to break down its meaning. In that manner, SEO is:-
1.A marketing discipline – understanding SEO is crucial to all your marketing efforts because this way you will be able to drive traffic to your website and generate leads and conversions. You not only need to write content that Google likes but also content that will resonate with your audience.
2.A technical task – knowing the best practices to optimize your content and site is important if you are planning to compete for traffic. People that know the ins and outs of search engine optimization are highly sought after because the ROI they bring is high.
3.An exciting field – I don’t know about you but to me, creating dope content and generating leads for free is quite amazing. Also, I love the ever evolving nature of SEO and the fact that it requires marketers like me to constantly read up on new algorithm changes and more.
What is on-site SEO?
On-site SEO (also known as on-page SEO) is the practice of optimizing elements on a website (as opposed to links elsewhere on the Internet and other external signals collectively known as “off-site SEO”) in order to rank higher and earn more relevant traffic from search engines. On-site SEO refers to optimizing both the content and HTML source code of a page.
Beyond helping search engines interpret page content, proper on-site SEO also helps users quickly and clearly understand what a page is about and whether it addresses their search query. In essence, good on-site SEO helps search engines understand what a human would see (and what value they would get) if they visited a page, so that search engines can reliably serve up what human visitors would consider high-quality content about a particular search query (keyword).
On-page SEO Tactics include:-
1.Meta tags: Properly formatted title tags, meta descriptions and headers (H1, H2, H3, etc)
2.Website structure: A website structure with separate pages for each primary service, product or topic, so that pages are well aligned with keywords your prospective customers are searching.
3.URL structure: Proper URL structure with keywords in the web page URLs.
4.Website copy: Well-written and informative website copy that provides the information that prospects are seeking when searching in Google and landing on your website.
5.Images: Images named with relevant keywords in filenames, and alt attribute text.
6.Contact Information: Complete and accurate contact information, preferably in the footer of your website.
7.Blog: A blog or other section of your website that you can frequently update with fresh content.
8. Canonicalization: Making sure that each page on your website only loads at one distinct location.
9.Sitemap: An XML sitemap that helps Google index all of the pages on your website.
10.Internal links: Internal links that make it easy to navigate from page to page, and no broken links.
11.Website Speed: A fast-loading website for improved user experience.
12.Mobile Optimization: A mobile-friendly website so mobile users can access and navigate your website.
What is off-site SEO?
Off Page SEO is one of the major parts of Search Engine Optimization. There are several off page SEO techniques used to improve page rank in the search engine results page. Off Page takes place outside the page. We should build good quality links with good authority sites by which we can rank higher on SERP ranking.
Off-page SEO Tactics include:-
1. Creating Shareable Content
Amazing content is always the KING in search engine optimization. Creating amazing and shareable content is a smart way to generating more and more natural back links to our website or blog. Research often and keep your content always fresh and updated.
2. Influencer Outreach
If you have created any kind of content which is share worthy, then don’t hesitate to reach out influencers in your industry. Tell them to check your blog and ask for link backs from their blog. Make sure you get the links from completely relevant domains.
3. Contribute as Guest Author
There are a number of good and quality blogs that are open for guest post from various authors. Write an amazing research piece and reach them with the content for guest post. Don’t focus on quantity of links but rather focus only on quality links. Also don’t keep posting multiple times on the same guest blog site.
4. Social Media Engagement
A major Off-page SEO technique is social media engagement. If you want to make your business, website or blog popular, engage with people on multiple social media platforms. Social media presence will help grow your business and also help you get more back links.
